1. Contact Adhesives
Examples: 3M Super 77 Spray Adhesive, Weldwood Contact Cement
Why they work well: These are widely used in automotive and bike repairs. They create a strong, flexible bond and don’t harden or block the foam’s pores. Perfect for sticking foam to foam or even to plastic or metal frames.
Good to know: They hold up against fuel, oil, and heat (up to around 120°C). Make sure you apply to both surfaces, let it go tacky, and then press together firmly. Always use in a well ventilated area!
2. Polyurethane Adhesives
Example: Gorilla Glue Original
Why they work well: These glues are great for bonding porous materials like foam. Once cured, they’re flexible and resistant to oil, fuel, and heat (100–150°C).
Heads-up: They expand slightly as they cure, so use a small amount and clamp the foam while it sets. You can trim off any excess afterwards. Don’t use too much as it might block airflow through the foam.
3. Specialty Foam Adhesives
Examples: Permatex Weatherstrip Adhesive, UniBond Foam Adhesive
Why they work well: These are made specifically for foam and similar materials. They stay flexible and breathable after drying, and hold up to heat, oil, and fuel exposure.
Tip: Apply a thin layer to both surfaces, press together, and let it cure. It’s always a good idea to test a small area first to be sure it doesn’t clog the foam.
