Fitting Guide – 400mm Motorcycle Rear Shocks

These shocks measure 400mm centre to centre, with mounting eyes sized at 14mm internal diameter × 18mm width (top and bottom). If these don’t match your original fittings, you may need a different bush set—see options below.

Before You Begin:
Place the motorcycle on a centre or paddock stand so the rear wheel is off the ground and the suspension is unloaded.

Check Your Bush Size:
If your bike uses different bolt or spindle sizes, the supplied bush inserts may need replacing. We offer:

  • Metal bush kit: SKU 019918
  • Plastic bush kit: SKU 019919
  • 14mm bush: SKU 019917
  • 23.5mm bush: SKU 019924
  • 24.5mm bush: SKU 019925

How to Change the Bushes:
To remove a bush, use a small vice or gently tap it out with a rubber mallet and socket or blunt drift. Take your time—support the shock eye so it doesn’t deform.
To fit a new one, line it up straight and press or tap it in evenly. A smear of silicone grease helps it go in smoothly and keeps things quiet in use.

Installing the Shocks:
Remove one old unit at a time. Fit the new shock in its place, making sure the adjuster collar is at the bottom for easy access. Thread in the bolts by hand, then tighten to around 35–45 Nm or to your bike’s spec.

About Preload:
Each shock has a notched ring at the bottom—this lets you adjust the preload, which is how much the spring is compressed before you sit on the bike. More preload means a firmer ride, better for heavier riders or with luggage. Less preload gives a softer, more comfortable feel. Make sure both shocks are set to the same position for stable handling.

Final Check:
Lower the bike and gently bounce the rear. It should move smoothly without knocking or binding. After your first couple of rides, recheck the bolts to make sure they’re still tight.
